Royal Time Residence: A Modern Take on Traditional Chinese Gardens

Shanghai PTArchitects Merges Classic and Contemporary in Display Center Design

Located in the heart of Taihu New Town, Suzhou, the Royal Time Residence is a unique blend of traditional Chinese garden aesthetics and modern architectural design. Crafted by Shanghai PTArchitects, this display center is a testament to the seamless fusion of old and new, tradition and innovation.

The design of the Royal Time Residence was inspired by the classic gardens of Suzhou, with the project owner desiring a space that could convey the same allure while also appealing to the younger generation. The result is a display center that consists of three separate buildings, each with its own unique shape and size, scattered across the site like glass boxes. These buildings are connected by various 'transitional spaces', forming a modern courtyard where future residents can socialize and communicate.

One of the unique features of the Royal Time Residence is its emphasis on the visitor's experience. The fluid circulation of different spaces, reminiscent of traditional Suzhou gardens, is a key aspect of the design. The use of large panels of U-profile glass as the main material for the façade of the buildings enhances this effect, creating a sense of openness and fluidity. The panels vary in size, with the largest piece nearing 10 meters high, adding to the visual intrigue of the structure.

The project also boasts a book-bar, designed as a quiet and pleasant space for the young and modern residents of the community. This independent building uses large panels of U-profile glass, providing readers with a serene and private environment. The glass panels are also eye-catching from the outside, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal of the design.

Despite the modernity of the design, the Royal Time Residence still manages to convey the inward temperament of traditional Suzhou architecture. The use of semi-transparent U-profile glass for the façade of the entrance transforms it into a dazzling 'jade' of light, welcoming visitors with its impressive modernity. The design also faced the challenge of organically linking the three different buildings – the showroom, fitness club, and book-bar. This was achieved through the introduction of a waterscape within the inner courtyard, creating a fluid experience for visitors and filling the space with richness and flexibility.

The Royal Time Residence is a testament to the innovative design capabilities of Shanghai PTArchitects. The project, which started in September 2019 and was completed in June 2020, was awarded Silver in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021. This prestigious accolade is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and the Royal Time Residence certainly fits the bill.
